Christopher Abbott stars as Blake, a San Francisco husband and father, who inherits his remote childhood home in rural Oregon after his own father vanishes and is presumed dead. With his marriage to his high-powered wife, Charlotte (Julia Garner), fraying, Blake persuades Charlotte to take a break from the city and visit the property with their young daughter, Ginger. But as the family approaches the farmhouse in the dead of night, they’re attacked by an unseen animal and, in a desperate escape, barricade themselves inside the home as the creature prowls the perimeter. As the night stretches on, however, Blake begins to behave strangely, transforming into something unrecognizable, and Charlotte will be forced to decide whether the terror within their house is more lethal than the danger without.
Director Leigh Whannell spoke with Empire recently, revealing his inspiration for the film, saying: “What The Fly did that a lot of other practical-effects-driven horror movies from that time did not do was bring the tragedy out of these practical effects. It wasn’t a joke in The Fly. It was there to illustrate someone who was dying of an illness. I was like, ‘I’ve got to do that’. It’s not about being funny or icky or gory. This is about the tragedy of the human body falling apart.”
Originally had an October 25, 2024 theatrical release. (3/29/24)
Ryan Gosling has dropped out and been replaced by Christopher Abbott (It Comes at Night, First Man, Possessor, Poor Things). Co-writer Leigh Whannell has also replaced Derek Cianfrance as director and the studio has set an October 25, 2024 theatrical release, so it looks like things are finally moving forward. (12/13/23)
Derek Cianfrance (Blue Valentine, The Place Beyond the Pines) is in talks to direct, replacing Leigh Whannell, who was previously attached, but had to drop out earlier in the year due to scheduling conflicts. Apparently after Whannell left the project, star Ryan Gosling approached Cianfrance to direct (the two had worked together in the past) and won him over with his take on the film. Cianfrance was quoted saying: “Horror movies were my first love — my entry into what cinema was capable of narratively, psychologically and aesthetically. Coupled with the opportunity to collaborate with Ryan again, this is truly a dream come true. I’m thrilled and inspired to work with the good folks at Blumhouse and Universal to bring this monster back to life in our collective unconscious.” (10/26/21)
Producer Jason Blum gave a brief update on the project in a recent interview, saying: “…we are also working on the script, got to get the script, right. In that case, it’s Ryan Gosling not Scott Cawthon. But working on trying to get a script that he feels good about and comfortable about and excited about.” (10/13/21)
Leigh Whannell (writer for several Saw and Insidious movies) is in negotiations to direct. He recently helmed The Invisible Man on a $7-million budget and the film went on to gross $124-million worldwide. (7/8/20)
Scripted by Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo (duo worked on Orange is the New Black).
Apparently Ryan Gosling pitched the story idea to the studio and at one point was going to direct. It’s said that Gosling’s take on the project “fell in line with the studio’s new vision for its monster movies.” He has since backed from helming and will simply star in the film instead, however at the moment he has yet to officially sign on to the project.
