Estimated reading time: 4 minutes

When all but one child from the same class mysteriously vanish on the same night at exactly the same time, a community is left questioning who or what is behind their disappearance.

Previously had a January 16, 2026 theatrical release.

Filmed in Atlanta.

Zach Cregger recently spoke to Empire, detailing more of what to expect from the movie, saying: “[It’s] a fun movie. It’s funny, it’s scary, it’s inviting. It’s not a grim, morose slog. And yet the story it tells is really fucked up. [It’s a] creatively ambitious [work, that’s] a lot bigger and weirder than Barbarian.” Adding… “Barbarian was an exploration of social themes; [it] was me looking at the world around me. This is more an exploration of my own personal shit, for lack of a better word. Weapons is me looking within, and working on myself.” (6/3/25)

Writer/director Zach Cregger spoke with EW recently, where he revealed what fans can expect from the movie, saying the following about the story: “That mystery is going to propel you through at least half of the movie, but that is not the movie. The movie will fork and change and reinvent and go in new places. It doesn’t abandon that question, believe me, but that’s not the whole movie at all. By the midpoint, we’ve moved on to way crazier shit than that.” Adding… “I wanted a horror epic, and so I tried to do that. It is more ambitious [than Barbarian] in almost every way. I don’t just mean in terms of the budget, but I just mean creatively. The story is weirder and it’s twistier and it’s bigger. The set pieces are definitely bigger. It’s just a bigger, weirder movie than Barbarian is.” (4/29/25)

It looks like Pedro dropping out is true, as recent reports indicate that Josh Brolin is now in talks to replace Pedro in the film. (2/21/24)

Actor Pedro Pascal is rumored to have dropped out of the project due to his busy schedule. This is treated as a rumor until something official is released. (1/11/24)

Filming was originally aimed to begin sometime in the Fall of 2023.

New Line Cinema will distribute theatrically in the US.

Rumored to revolve around “witchcraft and missing children.”

There was reportedly a bidding war for the project among several big studios, with Universal and New Line being the two remaining. New Line would ultimately win with an 8-figure deal. Richard Brener, president and chief creative officer at New Line Cinema was quoted saying: “Zach proved with Barbarian that he can create a visceral theatrical experience for audiences and that he commands every tool in the filmmaker toolbelt.”

The producers of Barbarian (Vertigo Entertainment and Boulderlight Productions) are back to produce this new project.

Written/directed by Zach Cregger (Barbarian).

Described as an “interrelated, multistory horror epic that tonally is in the vein of Magnolia.”
