The Conjuring: Last Rites delivers another thrilling chapter of the iconic Conjuring cinematic universe, based on real events. Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson reunite for one last case as renowned, real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren in a powerful and spine-chilling addition to the global box office-breaking franchise.
Filmed in London and Atlanta.
New Line president and CCO Richard Brener had a recent interview on a variety of projects, including this one, where he revealed that not only is this installment testing well already, but also revealed that this is merely “phase one,” implying that it may not be the end of the movies. Here’s what he had to say: “It’s testing through the roof and we’re only at the director’s cut, the 10-week part of the movie where you’re normally very, very scared about the status of your film. We’re very early in the process, have very preliminary visual effects, but it’s already through the roof. So while this is last of what we call phase one, we are hopeful that we can make more.” Adding that “phase two is TBD.” (4/2/25)
Michael Chaves (The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, The Nun 2) is in negotiations to direct with filming aimed to begin sometime this Summer in Atlanta.
James Wan offered a brief update on the status of the project, revealing that he’s still working closely to make sure they get things right, saying: “Yeah, we are working on it right now. With the Conjuring films, we are very precious about [them]. And so we kind of want to just take our time to make sure we get it right and to make sure the emotion of the Warren stories that we want to tell, and moving into, and potentially wrapping up, we just want to make sure that it’s the right thing, the right story that we’re telling.” When asked if it’ll be the last installment, his response was: “We never know. You never know. We’ll see.” (1/02/23)
Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga return as Ed and Lorraine Warren.
Written by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick (Orphan, Orphan: First Kill, Aquaman, The Conjuring 2, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It).
New Line produces, along with James Wan via his Atomic Monster banner and Peter Safran via The Safran Company.
The movie reportedly focuses on one of the Warrens’ most popular cases, which revolved around the Smurl family: “Janet and Jack Smurl moved their family into a duplex on Chase Street in West Pittston, Pa., in the 1970s. In the years that followed, the Smurls, including their young daughters and Jack’s parents, claimed to experience supernatural occurrences ranging from strange odors and voices all the way to ghostly molestations. The Smurls’ appearances on TV programs such as Larry King Live and Entertainment Tonight made it one of the more publicized cases of supernatural activity, but it also gave skeptics ammunition to say they sold out for the public spotlight. The story became the subject of the book The Haunted: One Family’s Nightmare (1986) and a 1991 made-for-TV movie starring Sally Kirkland.” Read more here.
This is the fourth and reportedly final installment in The Conjuring franchise, which has crossed the $2-billion mark after the last movie.
