Spain, late 1980s. Newcomer Sara (Carla Campra) tries to fit in with the other teens in this tight-knit small town in the province of Tarrgona. If only she were more like her extroverted best friend, Rebe (Aina Quiñones). They go out one night at a nightclub, on the way home, they come upon a little girl holding a doll, dressed for her first communion. And that’s when the nightmare begins.
Shudder debuts the movie via its streaming platform in the US.
Also known as La niña de la comunión.
Directed by Victor Garcia (Return to House on Haunted Hill, Mirrors 2, Hellraiser: Revelations, The Damned).
The film’s editor was quoted saying: “We didn’t want a film with too many effects and visual paraphernalia, we wanted to create something new that we hadn’t seen before, that would generate a certain impact, and, above all, to move away from dense, serious horror. I wanted the film to be enjoyable. I think that’s what viewers need now, to be entertained and not constantly lectured.”
This is a Spanish horror movie that has been described as “a waking nightmare with diabolic visions, religious undertones and terrifying truths that may better be left unspoken.”
This film is reportedly based on a little known urban legend about “the ghost of a girl dressed for her first communion, ready to shed blood and take revenge on anyone unlucky enough to cross her path.” One of the film’s producers was quoted saying the following about the urban legend: “If you look for her, she appears in various places, in Granada, in Galicia, and although she is not as famous as the girl with the curve, precisely for that reason she gave us the freedom to develop a whole story and a universe around her.”
The Communion Girl arrived in Theaters in Spain on February 10, 2023.
The Communion Girl premiered on Shudder on August 11, 2023.
